Mariners option Sam Gaviglio to Triple-A Tacoma

The Seattle Mariners optioned starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio to Triple-Tacoma on Thursday.

What It Means:

This move will make room for reliever Max Povse, who has been recalled from Tacoma and will likely slide into a middle relief role for the big league club.

In 11 starts and 12 total appearances, the right-hander has gone 3-5 with a 6.09 FIP and a .267 opponent average.

Manuel Margot officially placed on Padres' paternity leave list

San Diego Padres outfielder Manuel Margot has been placed on the paternity leave list.

What It Means:

Margot should return in a couple of days. Hunter Renfroe (neck) was activated from the 10-day disabled list in a correlated move.

Margot is slashing .259/.305/.376 with 10 steals in 276 plate appearances (64 games) this season. numberFire's models project him to turn in a .254 batting average with 7 steals in 195 plate appearances over the remainder of the 2017 campaign.

Padres activate Hunter Renfroe (neck) from disabled list

The San Diego Padres have activated outfielder Hunter Renfroe from the 10-day disabled list.

What It Means:

Manuel Margot has been placed on the 10-day paternity leave list in a corresponding move, after Renfroe missed the minimum 10 days. He comes into the second half with 16 homers and a .231 average behind the plate.

Our models project Renfroe for a .242 batting average, with 8 home runs, 27 RBI, and 25 runs scored over 219 plate appearances remaining this season.

Angels release Danny Espinosa

The Los Angeles Angels have released infielder Danny Espinosa.

What It Means:

After being designated for assignment on Sunday, Espinosa cleared waivers and will now be released by the club. Nick Franklin and Cliff Pennington are in line to get more starts at second base the rest of the way.

Through 254 plate appearances, the 30-year-old had hit just 6 home runs with a .223 wOBA on the year. In 2016, he bombed 24 homers with a .294 wOBA for the Washington Nationals.

Rays "looking at" Marlins' A.J. Ramos

The Tampa Bay Rays are "looking at" Miami Marlins reliever A.J. Ramos, according to FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman.

What It Means:

With reports that the Rays are also interested in the Detroit Tigers' Justin Wilson, it's clear that they are in the market for a top arm in the bullpen. Not a shocking development as their bullpen ranks 21st in the league with a 4.37 ERA.

Across 36 appearances and 35 1/3 innings, Ramos has racked up 17 saves and 2 wins on the year. He owns a 3.84 FIP and has struck out an impressive 11.46 batters per 9 innings in 2017.
